Beauty Beat by Rosemarie Haines
Grey’s Anatomy
At some point in their lives, most people start seeing grey hair when they
look in the mirror. Although it’s a natural process, it can cause panic.
Personal style and attitude determine the decision regarding whether or not to
color it. Historically, men have been considered more distinguished when they
“go grey.” It’s only been somewhat recently that grey hair on a woman is not
necessarily considered aging. As the Baby Boomer population ages, many magazine
and television ads feature women with grey hair. Advances in hair products
impart grey hair with shine and tame its wiry nature. Grey hair or not, it’s
important that the chosen hairstyle and color enhance the individuals appearance
and give the person self-confidence.
Whether you want to camouflage grey hair or amplify and nurture it, our
specialists can help you enjoy hair that is healthy, luxurious and full of body.
At Dazzles Salon and Day Spa, we offer Single and Double Process Color, Color
Spill, and Full Hair Expression and Season Changes.
A Manly Dilemma
Many men have difficulty selecting a hairstyle. The decision is surely not
an easy one, as it can drastically alter an individual’s looks. Relying on the
advice of a great hairstylist is important. Stylists take a number of factors
into account before making a recommendation. They will examine the man’s face
shape and features, as well as the color, thickness, and texture of his hair.
Other important issues they will consider are is profession and his personal
style. Clothing and shoes are the basis for a man’s look, but the hairstyle is
what ties it all together. Most current trends highlight texture and the natural
part, and the look is emphasized with the appropriate hair products.
Some men find it challenging to select a hairstyle that fits their facial
features, wardrobe, and lifestyle. At Dazzles Salon and Day Spa, we accommodate
men and women alike.
Why Dry?
A number of factors can result in having dry hair. Heredity, age, and
over-processing can be potential causes of the condition. Environmental factors
such as wind and sun certainly don’t help. Excessive blow-drying, as well as the
misuse of curling and straightening irons, can make matters worse. Poor
nutrition can be another culprit, and lack of exercise can also lead to dry,
lackluster locks. Even those with oily scalps can experience dry ends. To
address the lack of moisture, think hydration. Drink l;ots of water, adding a
bit of cod fish oil to your morning juice should make a difference. Allow hair
to air dry when practical. Use a hydrated moisturizing shampoo, and try a
leave-in conditioner.
Like your skin, your hair is subject to the drying effects of the environment
and other factors. Maintain healthy hair by having routine haircuts and using
quality hair care products. At Dazzles Salon and Day Spa, we offer customized
haircuts, hair color, texture changes, and special occasion design.

Getting The Shaft
Once hair grows long enough so that you can see it, it is biologically dead.
Each shaft of hair is unique; like snowflakes, no two shafts are exactly the
same. Hair shafts do, however, share some basic characteristics. A single hair
has a diameter of somewhere between 58 and 100 microns. It takes 10 to 20 pieces
to create a one-millimeter-thick section. A square centimeter of scalp can
accommodate 250 hairs, and between 120,000 and 150,000 shafts comprise a full
head of hair. The average person loses between 50 and 100 hairs each day. Hair
is quite resilient – it can be stretched up to 50 percent of its length before
it breaks.
Although hair that you can see on your head is biologically dead, it requires
continual care and protection from environmental elements. Every great hair
design stars with a consultation. At Dazzles Salon and Day Spa, our stylists are
trained to work with you to create a hairstyle that compliments your individual
facial features, lifestyle, and personal preference.
Flat Out Awesome
The Sleek styles that are popular today can be attained with the use of a
flat iron. Heating surfaces made of ceramic or tourmaline help make hair sleek
and shiny. After drying the hair completely, add a product that aids a smoothing
procedure. Pin the hair, and proceed to iron section by section, from the base
to the crown area. Take care not to start too close to the scalp. Use a slow,
steady motion. Moving the iron down creates a very straight look. Turning it
gives hair a slightly flipped appearance. Should any frizz remain close to the
scalp, you can use a glosser or some type of anti frizz serum to work those
areas. Set with a mist of hairspray. Straight hair is a healthy, sleek
look that is attractive for day and evening wear. At Dazzles Salon and Day Spa,
our stylists believe that hair design is a creative process based on an
understanding of your needs, achieved through careful consultation with you. We
offer hair straightening and special occasion styling. Maintain a positive
outlook through the winter season with a full body therapeutic massage that
improves circulation and promotes flow of energy.
P.S.: “I think the most important thing a woman can have, next to talent, of
course – is her hairdresser.” --Joan Crawford
Messy Is the New Neat
The tousled, no muss, no fuss hairstyle known as the shag is back with a
vengeance! Whether short, medium, or long in length, the layered look is in.
This relaxed look requires little care and just a bit of strategic styling.
After towel drying, apply a dab of styling product to make hair pliable. Create
some root lift to avoid getting a flat look. Applying a bit of pomade or wax
allows you to do some “piecing,” then lightly spray your hair into place.
Personalize your style with some highlights or lowlights. Emphasize the crown
area to create dimension of height. The possibilities are endless with this
timeless, versatile, easy – to – wear hairstyle. At Dazzles Salon and Day
Spa, we design and cut to best suit your facial features, hair type, and
personal preference. Keep your skin moisturized and looking its best with a
facial that gently cleanses, exfoliates dead skin cells, and hydrates.

You Rebel, You
Originating in the 1970s and the 1980s, the punk look was a statement of
rebellion against convention. Since then, the look has endured and morphed into
a fashion statement, and mild versions are seen in mainstream society. With
today’s punk look, hair is viewed as an accessory, and individuality is
encouraged. Colors can be bright, unnatural, and radical. Neon shades are
popular, especially when in stark contrast to the base color. Cuts range from
funky to the extreme. Achieving the punk look requires lots of hair products,
including gels and waxes to piece out the hair and hold it in place. If you’re
considering a punk look, consider a temporary dye used on just the bangs or tips
to experiment. Whether you want to maintain your current hairstyle or try
a new bold look, call Dazzles Salon and Day Spa at 845-897-5100 to schedule an
appointment. We offer haircuts, hair colors, and perms. Our colorists keep a
complete history of each session, recording the color process from beginning to
end to ensure continuity throughout your visits here. Relax and escape the
winter season in our Spa. You’ll be pampered and leave feeling renewed.
P.S.: “Hair style is the final tip-off whether or not a woman really knows
herself.” –Hubert de Givenchy, Vogue, July 1985
Drab To Fab
Hair color is a powerful beauty tool. It can add shine, lowlights,
highlights, warmth, and drama to an otherwise drab head of hair. Whether you are
simply covering gray, or going for a completely new look, your options are
endless. Select a color that will compliment your skin tone and eye color.
Choosing the wrong color can maximize your flaws. The rule of thumb is to go two
shades lighter or darker than your original color. Making sure your hair is in
tip-top condition before coloring can help insure great results and affect the
cost. A premium coloring service that includes pre-color serums can repair some
damage and insure even coloring with great results. Adding chemicals to already
damaged hair without such preparation can give poor results. Consultation with
your stylist is recommended. It’s a stress-free way of selecting the most
flattering color ahead of time.
Hair color can help your hair look luxurious and healthy and compliment your
facial features. At Dazzles Salon and Day Spa, one of our colorists can create
an individualized color based on your skin tone, facial features, and natural
hair color. We offer single and double process color, partial and full foils,
and corrective color. In addition to hair care, we offer massages, facial, and
nail care.
P.S.: There are basically four types of highlights: basic foil highlights,
baliage or hair painting, chunking or piecing, and low lighting. Your
hairstylist can discuss with you the effects of each during the consultation.
Thinning Hair In Women
The most frequent cause of hair loss is low thyroid function, which is
common among menopausal women. Other causes include changes in hormone levels
and increased stress, either emotional or physical. Hair growth also slows down
with age, when hair does not replace itself as quickly after natural shedding. A
stylist can help with shorter layered cuts that provide more body. Using styling
aids specifically for stressed hair tends to reduce the risk of breakage.
Blow-drying incorrectly with a brush or curling irons, and rollers that are too
hot, have the possibility of causing breakage.
P.S.: Female hair loss has different degrees of severity, causes, and
treatments. Talk to your stylist about products available to help minimize the
issue. Nioxin and Joico’s Renu line are two possibilities. Hair like skin
degenerates with age, losing its ability to retain moisture. A shorter
layered cut can help camouflage a thinning hair problem. At Dazzles Salon and
Day Spa, our stylists believe that hair design is a creative process that is
achieved through careful consultation with you about your needs and preference.
A haircut includes a shampoo, conditioning, precision cut, blow dry and
finishing. Please call us at 845-897-5100 to schedule an appointment.

Help Me Find The Right Look!
Simple guidelines can help when choosing a new hairstyle for a special
occasion or just for a new look. Trying to accentuate the best facial features
while minimizing the least favorite ones is important. With a round face, a
longer style, perhaps shoulder length, can minimize the width of the face. A
hairstyle for a longer face might be a shorter one with bangs and hair shaped in
an outward direction to give the face a wider appearance. Finding pictures of
women with similar facial shapes and features will be most helpful to share with
a hairstylist. Showing pictures to a professional stylist will help the stylist
give specific advice about a hairstyle that can be tailored for each individual
facial contour.
P.S.: Sometimes it takes a few trials before settling on a new look. Honest
communication is needed by both parties to achieve the best results. The
shape of your face is an important variable to consider when selecting a hair
style. Whether you want to try a new look or need help maintaining your current
style, call Dazzles Salon and Day Spa at 845-897-5100 to schedule an
appointment. Our stylists take time to learn about your preferences and evaluate
your facial features before recommending a cut. A haircut includes proper
shampoo and conditioner, customized cut, blow dry, and finishing.
Let’s Split The Difference
Split ends occur when the protective cuticle is destroyed at the end of the
hair. The hair then splits into two or more strands. Once the damage has
occurred, the best way to deal with it is by getting a haircut. A hair stylist
can employ a number of different methods to combat split ends. One of the
simplest ways is to have the hair trimmed at regular intervals. If the hair is
long, this is particularly important. Split ends sometimes occur because
protective natural oils do not reach the end of the hair shaft, leaving it less
protected and causing it to split. Having a regular trim will cut out the split
ends and keep the hair manageable. Proper use of products and tools are vital to
prevent hair splitting in the first place. P.S. It is a myth that
split ends can be repaired. Prevention is key. Talk to your stylist about
products and the correct use of styling tools that can help you! Routine
haircuts and proper care at home can help you to achieve hair that is shiny,
full, and healthy. Please call Dazzles Salon and Day Spa at 845-897-5100 to
schedule an appointment today. Our stylists believe that hair design is a
creative process based on an understanding of your needs, achieved through
careful consultation with you. Maintain your energy level with a full body
massage that helps improves circulation and melt away stress.
Crimp It!
Crimping is creating a hairstyle by using a crimping iron to cause a
temporary change to the hair’s appearance and texture with heat. Crimping is
very versatile and can be used to produce many different types of looks. It can
be incorporated into an entire hairstyle or just used on selected parts of hair.
Crimping adds texture and fullness to hair, and it works very well with thinner
hair; however, it can make thick hair look “too big.” As with hot tools, the use
of thermal styling aids should be used to protect the hair and give shine. One
advantage to the procedure is that it can be washed out with just one
shampooing. If you occasionally want a new look, crimping your hair is one
option.
Too Much Washing
Washing your hair twice a day or more may cause damage to it by removing the
nutrients that help to protect and nourish it. It can also lead to loss of
moisture and protein, which will leave the hair very dry, dull, and limp, and
with brittle ends. If frequent washing of hair is unavoidable, then conditioning
the hair each time becomes important because it helps seal the cuticle and
replace lost nutrients. If hair is colored, it will need a moisturizer. Hair
that is blown dry daily will need a heat styling protectant. As for the scalp,
overuse of shampoos can cause irritation, eczema, and dermatitis. The natural
elements, hair coloring or perming and the heat of a blow dryer can weaken your
hair and make it look dull. Using conditioner can nurture your hair and restore
its beauty and shine.
P.S.: A hair stylist can analyze hair and recommend the appropriate treatments.
Switching products after a long period of time can help give it a new feel of
texture.
Razor Sharp
A razor cut is a type of cutting without the scissors. It is a completely
different technique than using scissors. A razor allows a stylist to remove any
unwanted hair while adding texture. The hair strands can be cut so that shorter
strands support longer ones. This method appears to add volume while at the same
time removing hair. It also helps the ends of the hair blend together. A razor
cut tends to work best with medium thickness of hair. Hair that is too thin or
too short will not behave as well once razor cut. A modification to razor
cutting involves using sharp scissors on dry hair to create a tapered effect
with more controlled shape. Talk to your stylist to determine what method will
work best with your hair type. A precision cut is the basis of any successful
haircut. Whether you want a new look or need help maintaining your current
style, please call Dazzles Salon and Day Spa at (845) 897-5100 to schedule an
appointment.
P.S: A razor cut is most often performed on wet hair for manageability and
comfort. A new blade can play a key role when razor cutting.
Chemically Straightening Hair
The most common reason that
people decide to have their hair straightened is to eliminate curls. Sometimes
this process is used to soften or eliminate wavy hair. Chemical hair
straightening, also known as relaxing, involves a process in which the basic
structure of overly curly or wavy hair is changed into a straight form. Both
relaxing and permanent waving utilize fairly strong chemicals that are applied
directly to the hair shaft. The objectives of both treatments are opposite of
each other. While a perm is designed to add curls or waves, a relaxing treatment
is designed to remove them. Chemical hair straightening is not a difficult
procedure, but it does require a thorough technical knowledge of the relaxing
process. If you have curly hair and want sleek, straight hair, straightening may
be an option.
The Comb Over
Baldness is a typical
pattern of hair loss caused by hormones and genetic disposition. Some men who
are concerned with hair loss might try anything in order to hide or even reverse
this process. They may treat this condition with a hair transplant, a hairpiece,
or even prescription medications. Often the first method of defense is to resort
to the “comb over,” which is growing the hair long on the top, parting it to the
side, and combing it over a balding area. This is rarely successful and calls
attention to the balding area in question even more. Instead of settling for
this, why not go to a hairstylist and see if a shorter, longer, or even sexy,
shaven head might look better? If you are uncomfortable about your hair loss,
changing your hair style is one option. As a full service salon, Dazzles Salon
and Day Spa welcomes all individuals, ages, and styles. A stylist can provide a
hair care program to meet your personal preference, hair texture, and facial
features.
Where’s the Pool?
Frequently swimming in
chlorinated pools can be damaging to hair because chlorine is a strong oxidizing
agent that tends to damage the hair’s cuticle, or the outer layer that protects
the shaft of the hair. One way of protecting hair is to use a leave – in
conditioner with UV protector. Wearing a swimming cap can also add protection.
Heading to the shower immediately after swimming is very important, as chlorine
water must not be allowed to sit in the hair and the conditioner applied before
swimming must be shampooed out. If you are in a chlorinated pool more than 3
times a week, it is recommended that you do a weekly clarifying treatment. To
help repair any damage, follow with a leave – in conditioner, applied to damp,
towel – dried hair, making sure to distribute it evenly to all parts of the
head. Full, healthy hair doesn’t happen by accident – especially not in the
summer. If you enjoy swimming in pools, protect your hair and have routine
haircuts.
Ready For Something on the Side?
If you are tired of playing it safe, try something on the side. That is, try
parting your hair on one side or the other instead of in the center. This look
allows you to wear a ponytail in a casual, low maintenance way that does not
seem fussed over. It also gives your hair the feel of side-swept bangs by
partially covering your forehead on one side without having to cut your hair. To
get the look you want with a side part, spritz long hair with a volumizer and
toss it around as you blow it dry. Then, part your hair just over the arch of
one eyebrow before pulling it into a low ponytail on the opposite side.
The summer is a great time to wear a
low maintenance ponytail. Spend your time enjoying your favorite outdoor
activities rather than fussing with your hair. Please call Dazzles Salon & Day
Spa at (845) 897-5100 to schedule an appointment. A stylist can recommend a look
based on your facial features, lifestyle, and personal preferences. We offer
haircuts, Manicures, pedicures, and formal hair design.
In A Hurry?
Women don’t always have all the time they need to style their hair. This is
where it helps to know some short-cuts when you are running late. If you are
among the many women who confess to skipping shampooing when they are late, a
dry shampoo may be just the thing to bring you back on schedule. Be sure to
apply it near the roots and brush it through your hair so that it absorbs oil
and restores volume. You might also want to use a vented brush when it comes to
blow drying your hair. This type of brush has holes at the back that allow hot
air to pass right through, taking moisture with it.
Our goal at Dazzles Salon & Day Spa is
to help you look and feel your best, everyday. Whether you would like a new
hairstyle or just a trim, we are here to meet your beauty needs. Our salon
offers a variety of services including perms, coloring, manicures, and
pedicures, as well as waxing and massage therapy.
“Let Us Dazzle You!”
Longer Days, Shorter Hair
As the days grow longer and the
weather becomes warmer, it is time to think about shorter hair. After all, we
generally wear less clothing and eat lighter foods during the summer, so why not
greet the heat of summer with a shorter cut? On the practical side, shorter cuts
keep us cooler and require less daily upkeep. These are steps in the right
direction for those of us who regularly exercise and relax outdoors. As far as
appearance’s sake is concerned, a short cut can be as sassy and sexy as it is
easy to care for. The trick to getting a good – looking short cut is precision.
Asymmetrical bobs continue to be a favorite cut this summer. During the summer
months, some women with longer hair prefer to switch to a shorter style that is
easy to care for.
Flowers in Your Hair
One of the biggest new trends in hair accessories this spring harkens back
to the “flower power” days of the 1960’s. Whether they are single buds or
sprays, flowers are springing up in hairstyles. These floral hair
accents give hair a decidedly romantic feel and are helpful in softening the
edges on sleek, pulled back hairstyles. Of course, adding flowers to long, wavy
hair is also a good option for quiet evenings with someone special. If a
prom or wedding is on the calendar, nothing goes with a bouquet or corsage like
complimentary accent flowers in a woman’s hair. As rule of thumb, brunettes look
best wearing bolder primary colors in their hair while blondes and redheads are
well suited to pastels. Whether you are attending a social gathering, going to a
prom, or having dinner with someone special, you can dress up your hair with a
simple accessory. At Dazzles Salon and Day Spa we can help you look your best
during the day and evening.

Work It!
The best way to deal with your hair is to play
to its strengths. That is to say that if you have beautiful curls, put away the
blow-dryer, instead towel dry your hair, (without friction) and then separate it
with a wide–toothed comb and scrunch in some serum for moisture and shine. Start
at the ends where hair is the driest. Twirl your hair with your fingers to get
your curls going, and allow hair to air dry. If you have long, wavy hair, you
need only to give it a casual flip to one side to get that sexy look. Simply
mist your hair with water and a styling spray. To soften, run a curling iron
over the top layers once it’s dry, and push the front to one side.
When drying and styling your hair, you need to consider its length, texture, and
color. Routine haircuts and proper care at home can help you achieve hair that
is shiny, full, and healthy.
Our stylists believe that hair design is a creative process based on an
understanding of your needs.
